7 Hot Tub Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

The first hot tubs as we know them today were first invented in the 1950s. Today, hot tubs are more popular than ever and they are certainly a luxurious addition to any home. However, if you have a hot tub, you might be wondering about hot tub maintenance.

After all, if you want to make sure your hot tub functions for a long time, you'll need to know how to take care of it. Fortunately, it isn't that hard to maintain your spa. Keep reading and learn more about where you should start below.

1. Use a Hot Tub Cover

Using a hot tub cover is a sure way you can protect your tub and make sure it lasts a long time. A simple cover will make sure that no stray leaves or other debris will get caught inside your hot tub which you'll have to clean later. Besides that, covering your hot tub can also protect it from pollen, rainwater, and other things.

And, of course, using a cover is important during the winter, especially if you're in an area that snows a lot. Just make sure that you get the right kind of cover for your needs. If your location tends to get a lot of snow, you should get a cover that has a peak that allows snow and rain to roll off.

That way, there won't be a bunch of excess weight over your hot tub that might damage it, especially over several months.

2. Circulate the Water Regularly

Circulating the water in your hot tub is important for a variety of reasons. If you let the water sit still in there, then you will find that the water will become stale and dirty very quickly. It might even develop a bad odor.

This is because sitting water can develop bacteria, fungi, and other unpleasant things. Circulating the water on a regular basis, preferably every day, can help prevent these problems. This is because circulating water is difficult for bacteria and fungi to live in.

Also, circulating the water will ensure that any stray debris in the water will reach the filter where it will be filtered out. As a result, your hot tub should remain clean and you won't have to worry about stagnant, cloudy, or foul-smelling water.

3. Skim and Vacuum

The foundation of hot tub care involves skimming and vacuuming on a regular basis. Fortunately, these tasks are quite easy. To skim your hot tub, all you need is a special tool that picks up leaves and other debris that might be floating on the surface.

You can also skim the bottom of the tub if some of the debris happened to sink to the bottom. But a better option is to use a special vacuum. Such a vacuum will make it easy to pick up leaves, dirt, and whatever else might be at the bottom of your hot tub.

Keeping your hot tub clean is important. After all, no one wants to hang out in a dirty hot tub. More than that, excess dirt in the tub can cause your filters to clog and they won't last as long as a result. As long as you keep up with skimming and vacuuming your tub every so often, you shouldn't have to worry about those problems.

4. Clean Your Filters

Checking on your filters and cleaning them regularly is yet another important hot tub care factor to consider. Many people think that their filters will last forever and that they can tackle even the most stubborn of debris, but this isn't true. At a certain point, your hot tub filter will get so immersed with debris that it won't be able to function properly anymore and, as a result, it will have a hard time keeping your tub clean.

For that reason, you should clean your filters on a regular basis. Most of the time, you can just remove the filter and hose it down with your garden hose to remove the excess debris. But in some cases, this isn't possible, especially if the filter is damaged.

In that case, you'll have to buy a new one. Most filters tend to last a few years, so you'll need to replace them only occasionally.

5. Test the Water's pH Levels

The water in your hot tub needs to always be at a particular balance. If the hot tub's water falls into some extreme pH level, the water might start to damage your filter and other hot tub parts. More than that, certain pH levels make it easier for bacteria to start growing in the water.

Once that happens, there isn't much you can do to fix it except replace the water and figure out how to balance out the pH levels again. There are kits you can use that allow you to check the pH level in the water to make the process easier.

6. Change the Water

You should change the hot tub's water every 4 months. At that point, the water will be relatively dirty and in need of a change.

That way, you can rest easy knowing that your hot tub is clean and taken care of.

7. Don’t Forget About Repairs

If something breaks on your hot tub, don't hesitate to repair it. If you wait, something else might break and make the process all the more complicated.

Whether you hire a professional or do it yourself, make sure you take care of any repairs.

All About Hot Tub Maintenance

Hot tub maintenance doesn't have to be hard, but there are certain things to consider. For example, you should cover your hot tub when necessary, check the pH levels, change the water, and so on.
